Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro was indicted by the country's federal police on Thursday on suspicion of money laundering and criminal enterprise links in connection to a case involving undeclared diamonds.

Both sources declined to say what specific crimes the indictment includes, as the charges have not yet reached Brazil's Supreme Court. Federal police filed charges against Bolsonaro last August, alleging he tried to smuggle $3 million worth of diamond jewelry and sold two luxury watches, according to the Associated Press. Authorities say the former president received about $70,000 from selling two luxury watches given to him by Saudi Arabia.
According to Brazilian law, anyone entering the country must declare any items worth more than $1,000 and pay a tax equal to half the value of any items over that amount. According to the Associated Press, Bolsonaro would have been exempt from the tax and could have added the suspect watch to his presidential collection, but he would still have had to declare it.
Bolsonaro's home was also searched last year in a separate investigation into allegations that he falsified COVID-19 vaccination records. Authorities seized his cellphone after four visits to the United States and are investigating whether he and his aides used false documents to circumvent COVID-19 travel restrictions to enter the country.

According to the investigation, Mauro Cid, a former aide to President Bolsonaro involved in the COVID-19 scandal, is accused of selling a Rolex watch and a Patek Philippe watch to a US store for $68,000 in June 2022. Cid entered into a plea deal with authorities and admitted to the allegations.
The former president has yet to comment on the new indictment, but his eldest son, Flavio Bolsonaro, said: Taken He criticised the accusations on Twitter on Thursday, calling them “blatant and shameless.” In addition to the former president and Cid, 10 others, including two of his lawyers, Frederic Wassef and Fabio Weingarten, have also been charged in connection with the allegations.
Wassef commented on the allegations in a statement to The Associated Press, slamming the initial leak to the press and noting that he has not yet seen the full report. Weingarten also denounced the allegations on Twitter, claiming there is no evidence to support the claims.
“The Federal Police know that I have done nothing unrelated to the subject of their investigation, yet they are trying to punish me because of my steadfast and persistent defense of former President Bolsonaro,” Weingarten wrote.
