Former Youth Basketball Coach Accused Of Sexual Abuse, Offering To Buy Children From Parents

Police arrested a former youth basketball coach at the Boys & Girls Club of Florida on Wednesday on suspicion of child sexual abuse, authorities said.

The Marion County Sheriff's Office said Carl Philip Lombardo is charged with multiple crimes against children, including trafficking of a child for commercial sexual activity, lewd or lascivious sexual abuse of a victim under the age of 12 and possession of child pornography. Facebook Post.

Police said they responded to a call on Aug. 31 reporting that Lombardo, 58, had hosted a sleepover at his home and then failed to return the 15-year-old victim to her parents. According to the sheriff's office, Lombardo responded to the 15-year-old boy's parents' questions about him by sending a video that appears to show the boy writing a note asking if he could stay with Lombardo.

After it was discovered that Lombardo had had the victim write notes and record videos, the parents told him they were going to call police, authorities said.

According to the sheriff's office, Lombardo told parents they were not concerned because he worked for a local school and had a good reputation.

Authorities said the boy was returned to his parents at the end of the initial investigation, but several other children came forward and allegedly said Lombardo had sexually abused them and taken nude photographs of them.

According to the sheriff's office, authorities seized two of Lombardo's cellphones and found photographs depicting sexual abuse and images of the suspect embracing a minor.

Detectives determined that the suspect “used his previous job as a basketball coach at the Boys and Girls Club to build relationships of trust and gain access to children. He developed a pattern of having children stay overnight at his home for multiple days during which he sexually abused two juvenile victims, exposing himself to the children and taking inappropriate photographs of them.”

Additionally, investigators learned that Lombardo had admitted to offering to pay the parents $5,000 in exchange for custody of the children, the sheriff's office reported.

Lombardo was being held without bail in the Marion County Jail as of Friday, according to the sheriff's office.
