Four Islamic State Terrorists ‘Liquidated’ By Russian Snipers After Taking Prison Guards Hostage: REPORT

A Russian sniper shot dead four Islamic State (IS) operatives after terrorists from the group took hostages and killed several prison staff at a prison in southern Russia, Reuters reported on Friday.

The terrorists, some of whom were held in the prison, identified themselves in online videos as members of the Islamic State and appeared to claim they were motivated by “no mercy” over Russia's alleged mistreatment of Muslim prisoners. According to Reuters, the forces were mobilized after Russian President Vladimir Putin, who was attending a weekly meeting of the National Security Council, asked to hear details of the incident from officials around him.

“With four precise shots, snipers from the Russian National Guard special forces in the Volgograd region neutralised four prisoners who were holding prison staff hostage. The hostages have been released,” the Russian Federal Penitentiary Service said in a statement, according to Reuters. All four terrorists had been “liquidated”.

Video taken by the terrorists during the attack showed victims covered in blood, including one with his throat slit, Reuters reported. Another video shows an Islamic State member moving around the prison grounds, with one of the hostages with blood running down his face. Russian state media later claimed the terrorists were from Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

This year, the Islamic State has carried out several attacks on Russia.
