Frank Luntz Tells CNN Voters In His Focus Groups Have ‘Real Concern’ Harris Is ‘Extreme’

Pollster Frank Luntz said Friday that voters in his focus groups are concerned that Vice President Kamala Harris is too politically radical.

Harris supported many left-leaning policies during the 2020 presidential campaign and picked Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate for 2024. Walz also has a far-left record on immigration and transgender policy. Luntz told “CNN This Morning” that voters in focus groups liked Harris' “personality” but were unsure and concerned about “her politics.” (RELATED: Harris once bragged about working “behind the scenes” to get transgender inmates sex-reassignment surgery)

“She has to show that she has the answers, that she has the solutions, and that she's not extreme. That's the only thing I hear in focus groups: concerns about her politics. She's from California, she didn't make it to the first caucus, she made it to the debates and didn't do very well,” Luntz said. “So voters are asking themselves, 'What's behind that aura? What's behind the persona?'”

“They like the persona. They don't know the details. And for the next 80 days, that's exactly what she has to offer,” he continued. “Are they centrist, mainstream or radical? That's her challenge.”

The vice president is scheduled to deliver his first substantive policy speech on the economy in North Carolina on Friday, prioritizing cutting costs for Americans. Harris has yet to release a policy platform. Campaign website As of August 16th, the presidential election campaign has been going for almost four weeks.

During her time as a senator, Harris pushed for left-leaning legislation including diversifying the federal workforce, environmental justice, a moratorium on evictions and work permits for some undocumented immigrants. The vice president has previously likened Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents to the Ku Klux Klan and praised the “defund the police” movement, but has walked back some of her positions since launching her 2024 campaign.

“The greatest danger to Harris is this attack on her liberalism,” former CNN political analyst Chris Cillizza recently warned.

“She's from the coast, she's from San Francisco, she has a pretty liberal voting record in the Senate and has taken a number of very liberal positions, including banning fracking, supporting the Green New Deal, supporting Medicare for All, mandatory buybacks for assault weapons,” Cillizza said. “She's taken a lot of positions in the 2020 campaign that people aren't familiar with or don't know much about.”
