This Thursday, the Mohave County Lake Havasu City Bureau will present “100 Years Grand: The Story of Arizona Highways Magazine” in Community Room A/B starting at 4 p.m. This event, sponsored by the Arizona Humanities/AZ Speaks and Library Friends, Lake Havasu City Chapter, is free and open to anyone without registration.
Former publisher Winn Holden discusses the magazine's evolution from a simple pamphlet published by the Arizona Department of Highways in April 1925 to an internationally acclaimed publication. He explores the magazine's challenges and successes, including its unique non-advertising revenue model and operating without state funding as part of the Arizona Department of Transportation.
Arizona Highways Magazine has been published under Holden's leadership since May 2000 and boasts more than 120,000 subscribers in all 50 states and 100 countries. Holden has lived in the Valley since his 1980s and has received multiple lifetime achievement awards, including the 2015 Business His Journal Lifetime Achievement Award from the Arizona Department of Tourism and the Arizona Lodging and Tourism Association in 2017 and 2018. and is an elected member of the State of Arizona. He was inducted into the Tourism Hall of Fame in 2007.
