French President Adopts Trump’s Strategy, Aims at Important Privilege for Diplomats

Macron Takes a Tougher Stance on Algeria

When President Donald Trump notices other nations treating the U.S. or its citizens unfairly, he typically responds with swift action. French President Emmanuel Macron seems to have taken a page from that playbook and is pursuing a similar path.

You might not be familiar with the historical context here. The relations between France and Algeria have been rocky for centuries, dating back to the French occupation that began in 1830 and lasted until the bloody war of independence, which culminated in 1962.

Since then, various issues regarding diplomacy and migration have lingered. Things escalated recently when Macron joined other countries, including the U.S., in recognizing Morocco’s claim over Western Sahara.

This action was more than just a symbolic gesture; it triggered significant political and economic repercussions. In reaction, Algeria recalled its ambassador from France and has since been uncooperative, even accusing France of spying activities in prior years.

Amidst this diplomatic turmoil, Algeria seeks to engage in trade with France but finds itself at odds over its approach. The situation has worsened as Algeria has detained French-Algerian author Boualem Sansal and journalist Christophe Griez, citing issues of national unity and alleged support for terrorism.

Macron, recognizing the seriousness of the situation, has decided that a firmer approach is necessary. He seems to have intensified his confrontations with Algeria. He ordered the prime minister and foreign minister to terminate a 2013 agreement that allowed Algerian diplomats unrestricted access to France.

“We have no choice but to take a stiffer approach,” Macron mentioned to the French publication Le Figaro.

If a similar situation occurred in the U.S., it’s likely Trump would respond by leveraging the full extent of American economic and diplomatic influence. It’s reminiscent of how he utilized tariffs as a strategy to compel Mexico and Canada regarding border security. Perhaps during Macron’s previous visit to the White House, he picked up a bit of that assertiveness from Trump.
