CNBC's Joe Kernen and Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson expressed concern Wednesday that Vice President Kamala Harris could win the November election without giving any additional interviews.
Harris has given just three interviews since launching her campaign on July 21. election On “Squawk Box,” Kernen raised the possibility that Harris could win the election by simply differentiating herself from former Presidents Donald Trump and Joe Biden rather than telling the American people why she would be a better president, but Johnson called this a “scary idea.” (Related: Kamala Harris once thought a border wall was “un-American.” Now she supports it.)
clock:
“Nothing's unprecedented anymore, nothing's surprising. But as you look at the presidential election, Mr. Speaker, do you think it's possible that we could carry this over to Election Day and really not see Vice President Harris facing questions, random questions, in interviews?” Kernen asked. “Is it possible that that's possible, and that it's successful and people start saying, 'Oh, yeah, well, I'm not sure what's going to happen, but she's better than Donald Trump.' That's something that could happen. There may not be any other interviews between now and Election Day. And she may not be Joe Biden or she may not be Donald Trump. But she will be president.”
“That's a scary thought, and we have 48 days to expose her true record,” Johnson responded. “Kamala Harris is running a campaign that prioritizes fantasy over fact. She wants people to believe she's a moderate policy expert, but anyone who's looked at her record knows that's not true… Look at the promises she's made. She wants government favors for everything. It would completely bankrupt the U.S. economy. She's not a serious policy maker. She's saying whatever she thinks she needs to say right now to win the election. It's an act,” Johnson said.
The vice president has reversed her previous far-left policy positions since launching her 2024 presidential campaign. Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, an independent, recently told NBC News that Harris isn't “abandoning” the “progressive” values she promoted during her 2020 campaign, adding that she's “trying to be pragmatic and do what I think is right to win the election.”
“She stepped onto the debate stage and nailed it with lines that she'd memorized over 50 days because she'd never been interviewed or debated before. Congratulations. But that's acting. It's like an actor on a stage,” Johnson added. “But these are serious times and we need strong leadership in the White House. This is not a game. This election is all at stake, so we need anyone who understands this reality to take nothing for granted. This is not about personality, this is about policy. Whoever is elected is going to bring a policy package.”
Democratic strategist James Carville, on a podcast Thursday, advised Harris to mix “staged” and unrehearsed questions in her public speeches to make herself more memorable, while avoiding making it “obvious” that she already knows some of the questions.
