‘From Convict To Deputy’: Jelly Roll Receives A Very Special Honor

Jelly Roll received a great honor on July 27 when she was sworn in as vice chair of the Community Care Task Force.

Sheriff Christopher Swanson enthusiastically led the ceremony, and a video of the special moment was posted to Instagram by Detroit radio station 99.5 WYCD. Jelly Roll, a former inmate who served time for drug possession, drug dealing, shoplifting and robbery, was presented with his badge in recognition of the work he did to turn his life around.

“This is real, this is real!” Swanson exclaimed excitedly, proudly captioning the social media post: “From prisoner to sheriff.”

Swanson led the honor speeches with a smile and obvious joy.

“It is an honor to extend my position as Vice President, and today I will be sworn in by the President!” he said.

“Here in Flint, Michigan, with his own badge and his own ID!”

“Okay, everyone, get your cameras ready!”

Swanson instructed Jelly Roll to step forward and raise his right hand, then repeat, and the cameras started rolling.

“Here's your badge. This is the real thing, this is the real thing!”
