Fultondale City Council asks for the mayor to resign; mayor refuses to step down

Fultondale City Council Calls for Mayor’s Resignation

The Fultondale City Council voted unanimously to adopt a resolution demanding the immediate resignation of Mayor Larry Holcomb. However, despite this call and recent ethical findings, Holcomb has publicly stated that he will not resign from his position.

As reported by local sources, the council’s action follows a decision from the Alabama Ethics Committee on April 2, 2025, which indicated that Holcomb violated state ethics laws while overseeing the Fultondale Gas Commission. Additionally, on June 4, the committee filed a second lawsuit against Holcomb, regarding financial obligations involving both the fine and the city itself.

During a council meeting, Mayor Holcomb addressed the resolution and bluntly rejected the request to step down. “I say Nay, and to answer that request, my answer is no, I won’t resign,” he stated. Holcomb explained that he was indicted after Councilman Bryant filed four charges against him for ethical breaches, noting that three of these were dismissed while one stood. He mentioned that he had made a payment to the gas department shortly after a meeting, which he implied indicated his guilt.

Having won the mayoral election against former mayor Jim Lowry in 2020, Holcomb remains in office for now. The city council has not revealed whether any further actions will be pursued following the resolution’s passage. Notably, the next mayoral election is scheduled for August 26, 2025.
