Lao Tzu Patricia (Patsy) Hewitt Waterfall, 86, passed away peacefully in her home on March 16, 2023, surrounded by her family. She graduated from elementary school, Mansfeld Middle School, and Tucson High School in 1954. Patsy left Tucson and she attended the University of California, Berkeley. There she graduated with a degree in Political Science (1960) and met her ex-husband and father of her four children, Gordon Her Waterfall. After marriage, Gordon enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and was stationed in Marrakech, Morocco. Patsy quickly fell in love with Moroccan culture, and on her own she visited markets, learned to cook, and absorbed design and color. Patsy returned to Tucson when she became pregnant with her first son, the late Mark Waterfall. Patsy raised her four children in Tucson and demonstrated her dedication and leadership through her activism and philanthropy, especially for women’s rights and conservation. She has served on many boards, including the Junior League of Tucson, Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, Arizona Land and Water Trust (founding member), American Field Service, and the Tucson Botanical Gardens. Patsy has been Director of the Stonewall Foundation for over 15 years. For over 30 years, she has been a board member of Southern Arizona Parenthood and has served several terms as president. She is well known for hosting her annual potluck with her Planned Parenthood volunteers at her home on her Vista drive in Sierra. The event was attended by hundreds of men and women committed to protecting and promoting women’s rights in our communities, many of whom have become lifelong friends. She also served as Commissioner of the Pima County Open Space Commission, and as a member of both the Pima County Parks and Recreation and the Tucson-Pima County Historical Commissions, she contributed to the further shaping and protection of the area and to civic action. was also involved. She was also a subscriber and supporter of many local arts and cultural organizations. Patsy returned to school as her children grew up, and she received her master’s degree in landscape architecture from the University of Arizona in 1982. Before she started her landscape architecture practice, she worked for Acacia Group. Award-winning landscapes As her architect, Patsy has brought to life numerous public and private outdoor spaces that touch on her style of elegant, regionally-influenced design. Patsy spent time at the University of Arizona’s Pima County Cooperative Extension as her agent for the Landscape Water Conservation Extension. Throughout her career, she has published numerous bulletins, articles, papers, curricula, and film productions on this topic. Patsy is widowed by her son, Mark Waterfall. She has her sister Jane (Hewitt) Heffelman (Richard Heffelman), son Gregory Waterfall (Leigh Ann Waterfall), daughters Karen Waterfall and Julia Waterfall Cantor (Brian Cantor), grandchildren Melissa, Catherine, Survived by Sophia, Samantha. and Chloe, and her great-grandchildren Zachary and Maxwell.
