“We are looking forward to our third year at Gallery 928,” says Sedona Arts Center CEO Julie Richard. “This summer, our apprentices will create public art murals for our center while learning about the public art process from conception to completion and celebration.”

Apprentices receive art instruction, knowledge in the public art field, and develop specific employability skills such as resume writing, presentation creation, and public speaking. The student will also receive her $500 scholarship from the Sedona Arts Center and she will receive three free college credits through Yavapai College. A maximum of 12 students will be selected to participate.

Modeled after Chicago's long-running Gallery 37 program, Gallery 928 is designed to engage aspiring artists through art instruction by creating site-specific public artwork. Apprentices gain real-world experience with processes and materials, and develop strong connections with each other and the community as they work toward a shared vision.

“By the end of the program, students feel empowered,” says Richard. “Not only did they create beautiful works of art for all of Sedona to enjoy, they developed important life skills like teamwork, leadership, and responsibility. Best of all, they realized they could build a career out of their passion. I am.”

In addition to applying online, students must also submit letters of recommendation and images of their work. Qualified applicants will be invited to interview with Sedona Arts Center staff.
