Gary Vincent Scales Tribute

Remembering Gary Vincent Scale

Museum legal scholar and dedicated civil servant Gary Vincent Scale, who passed away on February 25, 2024, at the age of 76, will be remembered for his commitment to judicial equity and the numerous lives he impacted.

A proud alumnus of the University of Montana’s Bullwett School of Law, Gary forged a remarkable path early in his life. Despite coming from modest beginnings, he seized control of his journey through sheer determination. His notable federal career at the Department of Justice, where he prosecuted organized crime figures, reflected his genuine desire to serve those underserved by the legal system. Later, he served as a judge in the Superior Court in Gila County, Arizona, where his contributions to the community left a lasting impression.

Simple pleasures defined Gary’s life—whether he was running along the peaceful stretches of the Phoenix Canal, supporting emerging boxers, or cheering for his favorite fighters on screen. His quick wit and humor resonated with everyone he encountered. Yet, his most significant legacy rests in his deep affection for his children and family.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Grace McKinnon Scales and Vincent Anthony Scales II, as well as his sister Susan McMahon. He is survived by his siblings, Vincent (Tony) Anthony Scales III and Madeleine McKelvey, his daughter Erin Kane Scales, her husband Renato Termale, their children Roman Vincent Termale and Zoe Renata Termale, along with his son, Vincent James Scales. For decades, Gary served as the family patriarch, encouraging his loved ones to carry on his legacy of community service.

In lieu of flowers or other tributes, the family requests donations be made in Gary’s name to the National Association of Criminal Defense Bar Association Criminal Justice Foundation. A celebration of Gary’s life will be held in mid-April.
