Gemma Arterton Says She Was Pressured To Film Off-Camera Sex Scene

Actress Gemma Arterton, in an interview with Radio Times published online on Tuesday, said she was pressured by the director to film a sex scene that the script said was supposed to take place off-camera.

The famous actress said she felt extremely uncomfortable and “categorically” refused the director's request to do a sex scene.

“I remember being on set once and the director said, 'You have to have sex in bed.'”

“No, the scene was written so that we were off-screen, so you just hear the sounds,” Arterton recalls responding.

“I wouldn't have taken the role if it was going to be made into a movie,” she said. Radio Times.

“He put us under pressure that day,” Arterton acknowledged.

She went on to describe what it was like processing this information on the spot.

“The other actor, God bless him, was very embarrassed,” Arterton said.

“There were very famous people there and I said, 'I can't do that. I would never do that. I don't care if people think I'm difficult'. But I felt like it was only because I was older that I could say that,” she told the Radio Times.

The actress was asked how she would have dealt with the situation if she had been younger at the time.

“It would have been really hard. I would have been fired or I would have had a really bad review,” she admitted.

“That was before there were intimacy coordinators who act as intermediaries now. It's a totally different situation. Nothing happens that you're not comfortable with,” she said.

“I've heard other actors say, 'It was better when we didn't have an intimacy coordinator,' but I definitely think it's better to have one.” (Related article: Gina Gershon says sex scene with Tom Cruise took an unexpected turn.)
