Republican Georgia Rep. Scott Hilton, a Republican Georgia lawmaker who introduced the bill on the house floor before the strike, said his members would use taxpayer money for inmates in state custody to provide better health care than what “law-abiding citizens” receive. But Tanya Miller, a Democrat Georgia lawmaker who chairs the House Democrat Caucus, criticized Republicans for focusing on the bill when he said only five state prisoners demanded such care. She said discussing the issue on the penultimate day of this year’s legislative meeting overlooks more urgent concerns such as education, healthcare and public safety.
“Our constituents have sent us here to address serious and pressing issues affecting our daily lives,” Miller said. “But instead of addressing real issues, our majority party colleagues continue to take on the extreme agenda.”
After Democrats left the room, Republican Rep. Trey Kelly denounced their exit and said it was embarrassing to leave their office in exchange for defending financial responsibility. Republican House Majority Whip James Burchett said there are results in the election, adding that Georgia taxpayers deemed the issue important and opposed the option of fundraising surgery.
