Girl dies after being hit by car in East Valley, two years after near-drowning

SANTAN VALLEY, Ariz. — Tragedy has struck an East Valley family as they mourn the death of their young daughter.

On Friday evening, the Pinal County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of a child being hit by a vehicle from a residence near Combs Road and Painted Desert Drive.

The boy was taken to the hospital, where he died from his injuries.

Family members confirmed to ABC15 that the child is their daughter, 4-year-old “beautiful miracle” Mia Preston.

In 2022, ABC15 spoke with the Preston family after another tragic event nearly threatened Mia's life. They were visiting family in San Diego when Mia's father found her floating in the pool. He pulled her out of the water and called 911 for her.

Despite being in the water and performing CPR for 20 minutes, Mia's doctors found no signs of permanent brain damage.

She spent seven days in the ICU and three days in rehab until she fully recovered. Just two months later, Mia returned to her home and she began swimming again.

PCSO is investigating Friday's accident but has not released further details. The investigation is still ongoing.
