The Yuma High School Girls' Wrestling Club's season begins this weekend.
The Outlaws will compete in the Region 1 tournament in Fort Lupton on Friday and Saturday. The top four in each weight class will advance to the Girls State Wrestling Championships to be held next week at Ball Arena in Denver.
“We're going to win four or five states,” coach Brandon Newton said. “That's my goal.”
Region 1 has 25 schools and is actually the smallest of the four regions, so it's definitely going to be a challenge. Regions 2 and 3 each have 26 schools, and Region 4 has 27 schools. Next season's format will be a little different. Women's wrestling is divided into two weight classes.
Joining Yuma in Region 1 at Fort Lupton High School are Pomona, Fort Lupton, Canon City, Denver North, Abraham Lincoln, Adams City, Berthoud, Brighton, Bloomfield, Brush, Fort Morgan and Greeley.・Became West, Holy Family, Jefferson, and Liberty Commons. , Meade, Northfield, Platte Valley, Poudre, Sedgwick County/Fleming, Skyview, Sterling, Wiggins, Ray.
Yuma wrestling is Tayln Robinson at 100, Chloe Smith at 105, Camila Sanchez at 110, Payton Heinsohn at 115, Kenya Alviso at 120, Gese Sanchez at 170, Danica Sanchez at 110, Dischner turns 190 years old. Cadence Hanson and Gabby Barrera may be available at 125 and 130, respectively, but both are dealing with injuries.
“I believe in them,” Newton said. “They just have to believe in themselves. Everyone's excited.”
