Girl injured after redwood tree falls on California school during severe storm

Large areas of the state are now under flood surveillance.

A student suffered a minor head injury after a sequoia tree fell at an elementary school in the San Francisco Bay Area on Tuesday, school officials said.

A sequoia tree fell at Oak Avenue Elementary School in Los Altos, Santa Clara County, around 12:30 p.m. local time, school officials said. The girl was taken by ambulance with her parents to a local hospital.

Los Altos in Silicon Valley take pride in on that tree-lined street.

The incident occurred when the San Francisco National Weather Service reported gusts of gusts of 70 mph at noon on Tuesday. Fallen trees were also reported in nearby Santa Cruz County.

More than 330,000 customers in California lost power on Tuesday afternoon due to heavy rains and high winds.

Large areas of the state are currently under flood monitoring, and there is a high risk of flooding in Southern California.A total of 2 to 4 inches of rainfall is expected in many areas along the Southern California coast, and in the hills and mountains. Can be up to 6 inches total. During peak storms, rainfall rates of up to 1 inch per hour can occur.

Parts of Monterey County on the Central Coast are still submerged after a levee breach along the Pajarro River flooded the community of Pajaro over the weekend.

Rain is expected in Los Angeles and San Diego through Wednesday.

Atmospheric rivers are expected to be the next cross-country storm. It is expected to move east on Wednesday, bringing heavy snowfall to the Colorado Rockies and rain to the southwestern desert, where parts of central Arizona are under flood watch.

By Thursday, snow will be pushing from the plains of Nebraska and Iowa into Wisconsin.
