Volunteer shortages are affecting charities across the country. In Phoenix, Arizona, volunteer slots at Ronald McDonald Houses such as Dinnertime Heroes are only 50 percent full. Chief Executive Kelly Shulman said no one knows exactly why, but suspects the high number of people working from home is having an effect. Due to the labor shortage, we have had to postpone improvements such as increasing the number of employees. A recent U.S. Census Bureau/Americops study found that formal volunteering declined by 7% between 2019 and 2021. This is the largest decline the survey has recorded since it began in 2002. The shortage of volunteers has reached a level that puts a burden on volunteers. A safety net that nonprofits provide for many of society’s most vulnerable people. Colorado had the largest decline of any state from 2019 to 2021, at 16.1%. Hawaii. Wisconsin and Ohio also posted double-digit declines. Utah also dropped 8.8%, but still has the highest volunteer rate in the nation.
