Republican Rep. Pat Fallon of Texas lashed out at Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle on Monday during a hearing into the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump.
A 20-year-old man named Thomas Michael Crooks climbed to the roof of a building near Trump's rally and came within rifle range, killing former volunteer fire chief Corey Comperatore and wounding two rally attendees, David Duch, 57, and James Copenhaver, 74. Fallon re-enacted the assassination attempt on Crooks for Cheatle, telling him it was a “miracle” the gunman didn't kill Trump. “I've never had long-range shooting training in my life. I own an AR-15, but I've only last shot one time in my life, and that was six years ago,” Fallon said. “Until I re-enacted the incident in Savoy, Texas, on Saturday. I re-enacted what happened in Butler. I was lying prone on a sloping roof 130 yards away at 6:30 at night. I knew he had a scope, but I didn't know if it was a red dot or a magnified scope. So I fired eight shots from both, and you know what happened?”
“15 out of 16 shots hit the target!” Fallon yelled. “And the one I missed would have hit the president in the ear. That's a 94% success rate. And the shooter was a better shot than I was. It's a miracle President Trump wasn't killed. Cory Comperatore's life is over. The damn shooter got to the roof, but the danger wasn't the roof, it was the crazies on the roof. You know what else is dangerous? Your horrible incompetence and lack of skilled leadership is shameful. Your subterfuge today is shameful.”
Cheatle was previously PepsiCo's senior director of global security, where she was responsible for securing facilities across North America. according to See her biography on the Secret Service website.
“You should be immediately fired and return to working security at Doritos,” Fallon told Cheatle.
Republican Congressman Jim Jordan of Ohio grilled Cheatle about his answers to “basic questions” during a hearing into the assassination attempt.
“I don't think you've answered a single question from the chairman, the executive and myself,” Jordan said. “A lot of people have questions. We'll see if your record improves, but right now you, in my opinion, have not answered any questions.”
