GoFundMe Repeatedly Removes Fundraisers for DeCarlos Brown Jr.
Recent reports indicate that GoFundMe has removed multiple fundraising campaigns related to DeCarlos Brown Jr., a man with an extensive criminal history. One campaign aimed to raise $35,000 but garnered only $5 before being shut down. Another fundraiser sought legal funds for Brown, who had faced 14 prior arrests. The campaign claimed to fight against racism and prejudice, according to an outlet.
Some fundraisers argued that Brown was “decisively failed by the North Carolina judicial system and mental health services,” suggesting he was not entirely accountable for his actions. Another campaign pledged to oppose what it described as a corrupt narrative surrounding his situation, but it too was taken down.

The victim, 23-year-old Iryna Zarutska, was reportedly sitting in front of Brown on a light rail train in North Carolina when he allegedly attacked her. Surveillance footage seems to show Brown quickly approaching Zarutska, stabbing her in the neck multiple times, then leaving the train shortly afterwards.
In contrast, a separate fundraiser for Zarutska, who was pronounced dead at the scene, raised over $82,000 to support her daughter, Valeria, and other family members.
A representative from GoFundMe stated that the platform’s policies prohibit fundraising for the legal defense of individuals accused of violent crimes. In accordance with these guidelines, all fundraisers associated with DeCarlos Brown Jr.’s defense have been removed, and donors have been fully refunded.
