It’s been a great June so far, but the National Weather Service says temperatures will slowly rise over the next few days. Highs are 103 degrees on Saturday and 105 degrees on Sunday. Not too bad by Havasu standards, but hot by any measure.
Ready for a hot weekend? ‘Go Lake Havasu’ recommends a trip to Kingman’s slightly higher elevation. A marketing agency for the city of Lake Havasu reminds us that with Kingman’s elevation of 3,333 feet, temperatures tend to stay about 10 degrees cooler than in Havasu.
While in Kingman, visit the historic Route 66 Museum and Powerhouse Visitor Center. There, you can watch a documentary on the rich history of America’s Mother Road. The Kingman Railroad Museum is within walking distance and is housed in a 1907 railroad depot, displaying a variety of railroad memorabilia and three of his operating models.
Finally, there’s Locomotive Park, home to a 109-foot tall AT&SF steam engine. Here, visitors can step into his 1927 coal-fired steam engine and travel back in time. He retired in 1953 after driving over 2.6 million miles.
Go Lake Havasu also recommends a trip to Kingman Airport, where you can visit the decommissioned aircraft graveyard after tasting at the Desert Diamond Distillery.
Kingman’s other options include a Willie Nelson golf cart, a 1909 Elwell Parker baggage tractor (one of only two in the world according to Go Lake Havasu), the world’s first electric street rod, and There is an electric car museum with several Kingman microcars on display. 40s, 50s, 60s.
