The Mojave Community College Foundation has introduced a memorial scholarship in honor of Christian Michael Sweeney, a graduate whose life and accomplishments left an indelible mark on the community. The announcement was made with plans to hold a fundraising brunch in Shugrue's banquet room on February 17th to support the effort.
Christian, who died of nasopharyngeal cancer at age 26, was a testament to resilience and academic excellence. A graduate of Lake Havasu High School and Mojave Community College, he simultaneously earned his high school diploma and associate's degree in 2013. His academic journey took him to Purdue University on a full scholarship, where he studied nuclear engineering and graduated with honors in 2019. Even though he is battling stage IV cancer.
His passion for learning remained undiminished despite the harsh treatment. Christian attended classes at Crafton Hills University during chemotherapy and returned to Purdue to complete his degree.
He envisioned a career in nuclear engineering with a focus on safe and sustainable energy consumption.
After graduating, Christian wanted to work for Dominion Energy and further his research into hydrogen fuel technology.
Themed “Inspiration Around the World,” the scholarship brunch reflects Christians' world travels. Attendees will enjoy a silent auction and 50-50 raffle while enjoying an international menu prepared by Shugrue's chefs. Tickets cost $65, with proceeds going to a scholarship fund with the goal of reaching a $30,000 donation goal.
The Christian Michael Sweeney Memorial Scholarship embodies his belief in education as a path to personal and social improvement. We aim to support our students' educational efforts and ensure that our Christian tradition of curiosity, resilience and commitment to a better world continues to inspire and influence future generations.
The MCC Foundation would like to thank the community for its support in making this tribute to Christian life a lasting legacy.
