Investigators said the incident began as a rollover accident involving an American Medical Response ambulance.
Good Samaritan dies in Interstate 10 crash
DPS officials said the victim, identified as a man, was helping people involved in an ambulance rollover when the fatal crash occurred.
“Initial investigation indicates that the driver may have fallen asleep while the ambulance was traveling eastbound on Interstate 10. The ambulance appeared to lose control and was traveling back and forth on the roadway. The vehicle eventually overturned and came to rest on its wheels between the second lane and the right shoulder. “Two people, a male driver and a female passenger, both AMR employees, were in the ambulance at the time of the collision,” the statement reads in part.
DPS said two good Samaritans stopped at the ambulance and helped those inside. The two men, identified only as a man and a woman, were driving in separate vehicles.
“While attempting to contact the ambulance crew, an unrelated vehicle driven by a man collided with the ambulance, also striking two good Samaritans,” the statement read in part. “The collision caused the ambulance to fall off the highway onto the right side.''
Investigators say the Good Samaritan man was pronounced dead at the scene, and the Good Samaritan woman was taken to a hospital with unknown injuries.
Investigators said, “The male driver of the ambulance and the male driver of the vehicle that collided with the ambulance sustained minor injuries, and the female passenger in the ambulance was transported in critical condition.'' “The impairment of the driver of the vehicle that collided with the ambulance is under investigation and is believed to be a contributing factor to the collision.”
DPS officials said the investigation is being conducted by the Vehicle Crimes Unit.
AMR officials released a statement regarding the incident. The statement reads:
“AMR can confirm that one of our ambulances was involved in an accident on I-10 eastbound in Pinal County. Two AMR employees were involved. There were no patients or passengers on board. Both AMR personnel were transported to local medical facilities. “We are working to determine the details of the accident and are cooperating with the Arizona State Police, who are leading the investigation. My thoughts are with everyone affected.”
