Hello, this is Mayor Phil Goode.
We are pleased to announce that on Thursday, May 11, the Federal Public Health Emergency Regulations related to the Covid-19 pandemic will expire across the United States. Federal employees, international air travelers, Medicare- and Medicaid-certified medical facility employees, patients, and visitors will no longer need face masks and his Covid vaccinations.
national bicycle month
This is National Bike Month. Of course, we have to recognize that here in Prescott, Arizona as well. The recent Whiskey Offroad was a great kick off event. Leading up to this month and throughout the month of May, you’ll have a variety of opportunities to raise awareness of this important mode of transportation.
One event will be held on Friday, May 19th, the official bike commute day. “Ride to City Hall” will be held. Due to my schedule, I cannot attend, but Mayor Protem of Montoya and Councilor Rising will attend.
The event will start at 7:00 am. Attendees are asked to arrive early and meet at 1500 W. Gurley behind the Casa Sanchez restaurant. This year I will ride the new city hall for the first time! Wear a helmet and obey traffic rules.
The theme of this ride is “helping make Prescott a more bike-friendly community.” It is a good reminder for drivers to always be aware of other people who may be sharing the road with you, such as cars, trucks, motorcycles, and of course bicycles.

National Travel and Tourism Week
National Travel and Tourism Week and Arizona Travel and Tourism Week will run May 7-13, 2023.
“Experience Prescottis the city’s official destination marketing organization. “Experience Prescott” works to assist tourism stakeholders in their efforts to continually raise awareness about where to go, how to explore, shop, eat, play and stay longer.
Local tourism stakeholders include accommodations, restaurants, retailers, museums and attractions. The Official Visitor Center of the Prescott Chamber of Commerce has teamed up with ‘Experience Prescott’ to showcase the many great assets Prescott has to offer.
Prescott tourism means leisure travelers from Arizona and around the world who want to experience the great outdoors and historic downtown. Also sports competitions, business meetings, events, educational sessions, retreats and more. All of these activities bring visitors to Prescott and develop tax revenue for the city.
Locally, tourism income improves the quality of life for the entire community. Revenues generated by temporary occupancy rates (bed taxes) provide over $300,000 annually to support local non-profits and the Summer Concert Series Downtown, the 4th of July Fireworks, the World’s Oldest Rodeo, Supports community events including courthouse lighting and more. In addition, bed tax revenues help improve recreational facilities such as Lower Goldwater Lake and Granite Creek Corridor improvements.

hike safely
Last week, the Prescott Regional Communications Center received a 911 call regarding an individual who went missing with two pet dogs on Watson Lake in the Dells. When it got dark, the person was out hiking alone with her two dogs and they couldn’t find the way. The person made the right choice and decided to leave it alone and call 911.
Upon arriving at the scene, Prescott firefighters decided to use a drone to search and locate the individual and her dog. Prescott’s drone her operator was able to take off from the Watson Lake pavilion and traverse the lake. After a short search, the person was found near Peavine Trail along with her two dogs. The hiker was evaluated by paramedics to ensure there was no medical emergency. The individual was later reunited with his family and friends without incident.
Highs of 60 to 70 degrees Celsius and winds of up to 25 mph are forecast for the next few days. These temperatures are much higher as summer approaches.
Expecting the unexpected is very important when hiking. Bring more water than you think you’ll need, a charged cell phone, dress appropriately, and snacks if needed. If you hike near dusk, bring a flashlight as well.
If you run out of water or need help, calling 911 is your best bet. Once we have determined your exact location, it is very important that you remain in the area so that rescue workers can contact you more easily. Kudos to this individual for helping me.
The Prescott Fire Department, Lifeline Ambulance, and the Yavapai County Sheriff assisted in the rescue. I want to commend these first responders for a job well done.
