On January 10, the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to allocate $2 million to develop an affordable housing community for seniors in Goodyear.
Suncrest Vista, a new community, will be located south of the southeast corner of Loop 303 and Van Buren Street, near multiple grocery and retail stores. The facility is scheduled to open in fall 2025 for residents age 55 and older.
District 1 Board of Supervisors Chairman Jack Sellers said older adults are at higher risk of homelessness.
“Rising housing costs are disproportionately impacting older adults living in Maricopa County, who are the fastest growing segment of our population in homelessness,” Sellers said.
“We are proud to work with the City of Goodyear to provide additional stability and security to those hardest hit by the housing crisis.”
The 261 rental apartments feature in-room amenities such as central air conditioning and high-speed internet, as well as community amenities such as a fitness center and swimming pool. Some apartments are also wheelchair accessible.
Ten units will be set aside for households making less than half of Goodyear's median household income, and construction will be funded by donations from Maricopa County. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the median household income in Goodyear is approximately $97,000.
The remaining construction costs will be covered by Maricopa County's American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) allocation. ARPA, a $1.9 trillion federal initiative, was passed in 2021 to provide economic relief to communities recovering from the pandemic.
To ensure affordable housing, the facility requires residents to have a minimum household income of 2.5 times the monthly rent, but has income limits based on household size.
For a household with two seniors, the income limit would be approximately $51,000. For her 10 units reserved, the income cap for two seniors would be her $37,400.
