Governor Hobbs tours Southern Arizona

TUCSON, Arizona (KGUN) — Arizona’s new governor toured southern Arizona on Tuesday to learn more about what the region needs.

Governor Hobbs had a quiet moment during the January 8 memorial service. Six people were killed and 13 wounded in a mass shooting 12 years ago.

Governor Hobbes met with the Border County Union. County superintendent of Yuma, Pima, Santa Cruz, and Cochise counties. They asked about controlling crime at the border while facilitating legal cross-border traffic that boosts Arizona’s economy.

They spoke with the governor about border crime and legal cross-border trade, which is so important to Arizona’s economy.

Cochise County Supervisor Ann English said: She seemed reluctant to go which is always a good sign when she’s asking questions wanting to know more about us and this is the first step for her to get to know us better was.

Coalition member and Pima County supervisor Sharon Bronson wants to know what the county can do with programs to help asylum seekers when millions of dollars in federal funding stop.

“The money we have at the moment will mostly evaporate in May.”

KGUN 9 reporter Craig Smith asked: “What are you going to do?”

Bronson: “That’s what we asked her. How can you help the governor? They can’t do that because they need help to keep dealing with asylum seekers.” So Pima County doesn’t have the budget to maintain it.”

And Bronson says he doesn’t support applying local taxes to shelters for asylum seekers.

Santa Cruz County Supervisor Bruce Blacker says governor looks to work to support cross-border commerce

“She feels it is very important to understand that trade with Mexico drives Arizona’s economy. Sonora has 110 manufacturing plants, and all of those offices and businesses are based in Maricopa and Pima counties. Otherwise they wouldn’t be there.”

But Mr. Blacker said Gov. Hobbs made no specific promises and simply listened to the concerns of southern Arizona.

The Governor’s visit also included stops at the offices of the El Rio Health Clinic, DPS Headquarters in Southern Arizona, Customs and Border Protection, and the Casa Aritas Shelter for Cross-Border Asylum Seekers. Her visit ended in Nogales with a tour of the Mariposa Port of Entry including Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorcas.
