Gov. Kay Ivey sent a message to all Alabama students in kindergarten through eighth grade over the weekend announcing a statewide reading challenge this summer.
“With summer vacation fast approaching, I want to remind everyone that while it's a time to relax and enjoy some well-deserved rest, it's also a time to keep your mind active and engaged,” said Ivey. “And what better way to do that than with a good book?”
“Last year, many of you participated in my Summer Reading Challenge and I was amazed at the enthusiasm you all brought to your reading adventure. Well, guess what? The challenge is back and I am inviting each and every one of you to join my Summer Reading Challenge again.”

The governor explained the challenge in his speech, emphasizing that he wants to hear “everything” about the books Alabama students will be reading this summer.
“So here's a challenge,” Ivy said, “If you're going from kindergarten to eighth grade next school year, write me this summer. Tell me your favorite summer reading book and why it captured your heart. I can't wait to hear from you and spend the summer together.”

The Summer Reading Challenge officially begins May 24th and ends July 31st. All letters should be addressed to Governor Ivey and mailed to 600 Dexter Avenue. Students should include their name, the grade they will be entering, and the school they will be attending.
“Now, let's start reading,” Governor Ivey said.
