Governor Ivey names Ami Brooks as the new secretary for early childhood education

Governor Appoints New Secretary for Early Childhood Education

On Tuesday, Governor Kay Ivey announced the appointment of Ami Brooks as the new secretary of the Alabama Department of Early Childhood Education. This change comes after Jan Hume’s resignation, who has been with the agency for nearly 14 years and is now taking a position as a professor of administrative practice at Auburn University. Both Hume and the governor were present at the announcement.

“Individuals like Ami are pivotal to Alabama maintaining its leadership in early childhood education for 19 consecutive years,” Ivy stated. He highlighted Brooks’ history in the department and her commitment to initiatives aimed at providing children across Alabama with a solid foundation, mentioning programs like the Dolly Parton Imagination Library.

“I appreciate your service to Alabama, and I believe Auburn will benefit from Hume’s expertise in the coming years. I’m looking forward to seeing how Ami will guide the Department of Early Childhood Education to build upon our achievements,” Ivy added.

Brooks, like the governor, has classroom experience, having taught young elementary students for about 20 years. She was a finalist for the Alabama Teacher of the Year in 2017, which speaks volumes about her dedication.

“It’s a tremendous honor to be appointed by Governor Ivey as secretary of the Alabama Department of Early Childhood Education,” Brooks expressed. “My work with young children has always brought me joy, and I am eager to collaborate with others who share the same commitment to giving every child a strong start. Contributing to such essential work is truly a privilege.”

Currently, Brooks serves as the director of the P-3 Partnership within the Alabama Department of Early Childhood Education. In this role, she covers all aspects of the P-3 program, which is central to the governor’s educational initiatives. Brooks also has experience as the department’s first coach facilitator. Both Hume and Governor Ivey recognize her as a key leader in the department’s accomplishments over the years.

Hume will remain in her role through the summer to ensure a smooth transition. Brooks is set to officially take on her new responsibilities starting June 16, 2025.
