Governor Ivey shares Labor Day message with Alabama workers

Alabama Governor’s Labor Day Message

This weekend, Alabama Governor Kay Ivey shared a video message honoring the state’s workforce in celebration of Labor Day.

“My fellow Alabamians, this day is set aside to recognize the men and women who keep our nation running—a dedicated workforce here in Alabama,” Ivy stated. “In our state, we know a thing or two about hard work: we rise early and stay the course.”

“We take pride in our state’s achievements. We have built strong families, created jobs, and ensured that pathways from classrooms to careers are open,” she continued. “When we put in the effort, Alabama thrives. Whether it’s iron, aerospace, agriculture, or cargo, when it’s made in Alabama, it’s done right. Today, we honor all those who build, grow, teach, and serve our nation.”

“Happy Labor Day, Alabama. I appreciate your hard work,” Ivey concluded.

Her message followed the announcement that over 2.3 million Alabamians were employed, marking a new employment record set in July, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The state’s unemployment rate has been steadily decreasing since early 2025, hitting a low of 3.0% in July, while the national rate stands at 4.2%. However, Alabama’s unemployment rate remains relatively unchanged compared to last year. The state is seeing only modest gains in its workforce participation rate.

Unemployment rates are currently lowest in Shelby, St. Clair, Limestone, Elmore, and Baldwin counties at 2.3%. In contrast, Perry County has the highest rate at 6.9%, followed by Green at 5.8% and Wilcox at 5.6%. Among larger cities, Vestavia Hills has the lowest rate at 2.0%, while Prichard has a higher rate of 6.3%, followed by Selma at 4.8% and Tuscaloosa at 4.5%.
