Governor Ivey urges Alabama residents to pick up their fishing gear and take part in Free Fishing Day on June 7

Governor Kay Ivey is encouraging anglers of all levels to participate in the Free Fishing Day in Alabama on June 7th. This annual event allows residents and visitors alike to fish in most public waters across the state without needing a fishing license. It’s a great chance to experience Alabama’s beautiful natural resources without breaking the bank.

“From the Gulf of Mexico to our mountain streams, Alabama offers some truly top-notch fishing locations,” Ivey noted. “Free Fishing Day is a fantastic opportunity not only to enjoy nature but also to support our local economy. I really encourage everyone in Alabama to take advantage of it. So grab your tackle box and get out there!”

The Free Fishing Day coincides with National Fishing and Boating Week, running from June 1st to June 8th. This initiative aims to promote outdoor recreation and welcomes newcomers to fishing without the responsibility of obtaining a fishing license.

While most public freshwater and saltwater spots are included in the exemption, anglers still need permits for state public fishing lakes, and fishing in private ponds requires landowner approval. It’s also worth noting that some public piers might have separate fees or permit requirements.

This year’s Free Fishing Day is being promoted by the Academy Sports + Outdoor. To encourage participation, the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR) is sharing details and discounts via social media to current fishing license holders.

Chris Blankenship, the commissioner at ADCNR, stated, “Fishing is not just fun; it provides numerous mental and physical health benefits. It’s an excellent way for families to bond outdoors. Free fishing days are perfect for anyone who has never tried fishing. We hope many people take this chance to explore the great outdoors.”

Additionally, the date coincides with Alabama’s Red Snapper Season, meaning that saltwater anglers won’t need a saltwater fishing license or reef fish approval on June 7th.

Alabama boasts over 132,000 miles of freshwater rivers and streams, 50 miles of coastline along the Gulf, 23 public fishing lakes, some of the best bass fishing locales, and the largest artificial reef system in the world. It’s quite the haven for anglers. Even if you’re not fishing, there are plenty of beautiful freshwater and coastal boat access areas to enjoy.
