PHOENIX – Grand Canyon National Park’s North Rim will open for the season next month, but services will be limited due to water outages, officials said.
The National Park Service said water conservation measures were being put in place after landslides from winter storms destroyed more than 300 feet of water pipelines on the North Rim. said in a press release Wednesday.
According to a release, Grand Canyon Lodge will reopen on June 2, but will not offer accommodations for the time being. The facility will be open during the day only and will offer limited food and beverage services until at least July 23.
“The decision to suspend accommodations at the Grand Canyon Lodge was not taken lightly and will continue to serve tourists planning trips to the North Rim,” said Ed Keble, director of Grand Canyon National Park, in a release. I know it’s inconvenient for us,” he said.
Keeble said the Parks Authority is working with partners “to determine appropriate operational strategies in the event that locally pumped water is not available.”
General stores, gift shops and gas stations will also reopen seasonally starting June 2.
The North Rim was originally scheduled to reopen from winter closures this week, but officials said in April that more time would be needed to clear the region’s roads after one of the heaviest snow seasons on record.
The North Rim Campground will open on June 9 with potable water and toilets, but laundry and shower facilities will be closed until at least July 23. reserve is required.
Visitors will not be able to hike the North Kaibab Trail immediately, as repair work following winter rockfalls and landslides will close the trail until at least June 15.
