Gulf State Park’s Campsite Recognition
Gulf State Park has established itself as a leading destination for RV enthusiasts, featuring nearly 500 paved Full Frui Top campsites. Presently, it has earned acclaim as one of the premier camping spots in the United States, receiving the USA TODAY 10BEST Reader’s Choice Award for 2025 as the best RV campsite. This announcement highlights the park’s remarkable reputation.
Commissioner of the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Chris Blankenship, expressed, “If you want to understand why our state is called ‘Alabama the Beautiful’, visit Gulf State Park.” He noted that the park remains open year-round, which speaks volumes about the commitment of the staff. It’s gratifying to see the site gain national recognition.

Attracting over three million visitors annually, the park’s campsite, which is conveniently accessible by foot or bicycle from the stunning sugar-white beach, is among its top draws.
The Gulf State Park campsite’s recent accolade marks the second instance of national recognition since 2025. Just last month, the Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail was honored as one of the nation’s top recreation trails for the third consecutive year.
Additionally, Gulf State Park was recognized as the sixth best coastal small town in the U.S. through the USA TODAY 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards.
The park’s campgrounds are well-equipped for modern RVs, accommodating various sizes, as all current pads measure at least 45 to 65 feet. Amenities include updated air-conditioned bathrooms, splash pads, and courts for tennis, pickleball, and volleyball, alongside a swimming pool and nature centers.
To enhance its offerings, campsites are expanding, with plans to develop over 100 new sites where former golf courses existed. This expansion, slated for completion in 2026, promises to provide a luxury camping experience, featuring spacious lots and additional amenities like a clubhouse and putting greens.
Matthew Caps, director of Alabama State Park, shared excitement about the campsite’s expansion, especially considering the challenge of securing reservations during the bustling summer months. It’s fulfilling to see the site recognized nationally, with aspirations to continue improving.
The park also revamped its fishing pier in 2024 after a $13.6 million renovation, following damages caused by Hurricane Surry in 2020. Major renovations were also completed on the Beach Pavilion last year.
“Gulf State Park is one of our state’s natural treasures, and we are truly grateful for this national recognition,” Blankenship added.
