Snow fell on Mount Humphreys in Flagstaff Friday morning as temperatures dropped and thunderstorms rolled into northern Arizona.
The National Weather Service predicts 8 to 12 inches of snow will fall at Arizona Snowbowl, a ski resort on Mount Humphreys, this weekend, with most of it falling between 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. Friday.
Sources said the storm brought hail and muddy roads in the Flagstaff area. National Weather Service Post to Xformerly known as Twitter. The largest reported diameter was about half an inch, small but enough to affect roads, said Valerie Meola, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.
Strong thunderstorms coupled with strong winds are expected to move through the region from Friday morning into Friday night. The National Weather Service reports that snow and rain conditions are expected to continue into Sunday, but snow accumulation is expected to total less than 2 inches.
The winter weather is expected to extend beyond the Flagstaff area to Show Low and Window Rock on the Navajo Nation. A winter weather warning was issued for the Kaibab Plateau and Chaska Mountains in northeastern Arizona early Friday morning.
High temperatures on Friday and Saturday are expected to be in the 40s, and Sunday’s highs will be in the mid-50s.
“It’s definitely colder than we would expect at this time of year,” Meola said. “Typical temperatures in Flagstaff are in the low 60s for mid-October.”
However, the winter weather is not expected to last very long. The National Weather Service predicts temperatures will rise into the low 70s by Wednesday, which Meola said is unusually warm for this time of year. No rain is expected after the weekend.
According to the National Weather Service, the average day that measurable snow begins to fall in Flagstaff is around Nov. 11. Friday’s snow “came early, but it’s not unprecedented,” Meola said.
The last measurable snow in Flagstaff was April 27th.
