Sierra Vista, Ariz. (KGUN) — When Genell Joseph moved to Sierra Vista from Louisiana, she brought back a new back-to-school tradition.
The Gingers Beauty Salon owner said he wanted to attend a free haircut event like he did in Louisiana, but couldn’t find one.
So she started herself.
For the past four years, Joseph has collaborated with other barbers and hair stylists to host free haircut events for local children.
“I know what it was like when I came to school. You want to look good on your first day of school and you want everything to look good,” Joseph said. “So that’s what made me do it. I want my kids to go back to school and have a great experience.”
Joseph said he will be partnering with Juan’s Barber Shop this year to cut hair for eight employees. Juan’s Barber’s barber, Tracy Rivera, was the first to join Joseph’s efforts after hearing of her work. Rivera said she was worth it when she saw the look on the children’s faces leaving the event.
In addition to complimentary haircuts, food is served while participants wait. Joseph said there are activities planned throughout the day that children and families can participate in.
This year’s event will be held on Sunday, July 30th from noon to 8pm at The Salvation Army. Final walk-in haircuts are accepted at 7pm.
Last year, volunteers served more than 200 children in the area. The expansion of this event prompted Joseph and her team to help people outside of Sierra Vista.
For the first time ever, Joseph said he would be hosting a second event in Tombstone. She said a customer of hers suggested the idea because some people in Tombstone can’t go to Sierra Vista but want to participate.
The Tombstone event is scheduled for Wednesday, August 2nd.
