Jeffries Announces New Appointments to January 6 Subcommittee
House minority leader Hakeem Jeffries shared news of his return on Monday, alongside the announcement from the January 6 subcommittee. Representative Eric Swalwell from California will take on a significant role as a top-ranked member of the committee.
The committee will include several notable House Democrats, like Jasmine Crockett from Texas and Jamie Raskin from Maryland. Their goal is to ensure that Americans “never forget who was responsible” for the Capitol riots that occurred on January 6, 2021. Jeffries commended Swalwell, describing him as a “very skilled former prosecutor” and an individual who holds people accountable.
“Republican Democrats are pushing back against this backdrop, and it’s great to have Rep. Eric Swalwell appointed as a ranking member,” Jeffries stated. He also expressed pride in appointing two accomplished members of the House Judiciary Committee: Jasmine Crockett and Jared Moskovitz. Raskin is recognized as a leading advocate for the Constitution.

Swalwell has been at the center of scrutiny following revelations about his previous relationship with Christine Fang, a Chinese national thought to be involved in espionage. Fang allegedly contributed to Swalwell’s reelection campaign in 2014 and even had an intern placed in his office.
In 2015, the FBI informed Swalwell about Fang’s potential role as a spy, prompting him to sever all ties. Fang, it’s reported, left the United States the same year. In May 2023, Swalwell was cleared by the House Ethics Committee.
Recently, Swalwell posted an odd video pretending to receive a vaccine on August 26, involving Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

Meanwhile, Crockett has gained attention for her contentious behavior towards colleagues during congressional hearings. Notably, she created a memorable phrase during an exchange with Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Following devastating floods in her state that took the lives of 27 children, Crockett took to Instagram on July 9 to express her frustrations, sharing a video about feeling weighed down by President Trump. Allegations have surfaced suggesting that Texas lawmakers have been intimidated by her temperamental approach, leading staff to feel uneasy.
Jeffries has criticized House Republicans for attempting to “whitewash the violence” that occurred during the riots years ago.
