Hamas Drops Key Demand, Clearing Way For Potential Ceasefire: REPORT

Hamas initially approved the proposed ceasefire agreement after dropping one of its key demands, according to the Associated Press.

Hamas, which launched attacks on Israel on Oct. 7, taking hundreds hostage and killing 1,200, agreed not to seek a commitment from Israel to end the war entirely. according to The Associated Press, citing Egyptian and Hama officials, said the proposal called for a six-week halt to fighting, terrorist groups releasing hundreds of Palestinian prisoners in exchange for the release of women, sick and elderly hostages, and Israel withdrawing from northern Gaza. The two sides will then negotiate the return of the prisoners in exchange for the remaining hostages and eventually draw up a reconstruction plan, a proposal backed by the United States, according to the Associated Press.

During a phone call in April, President Joe Biden urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to accept a cease-fire agreement, saying an “immediate cease-fire” was “essential.”

On June 8, Israeli forces raided two locations in the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza and freed four hostages, including Noah al-Ghamani, Almog Meir Jan, Andrei Kozlov, and Shlomi Ziv.
