A cornerstone of the motorcycle world for more than 120 years, the company emphasized its guiding principle of “Ride Together,” a philosophy that underscores the company's dedication to welcoming riders of all backgrounds. Harley-Davidson expressed disappointment at the negativity that has surfaced on social media aimed at dividing its loyal community. In light of these developments, the company felt it was necessary to address the situation with transparency and decisive action.

According to a statement released by the company's official Twitter account earlier this year, Harley-Davidson conducted a comprehensive internal review to ensure its activities were aligned with the needs of both its business and its diverse communities.

As a result of this review, the company has made significant changes, particularly with regards to its approach to diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI). Harley-Davidson announced that it will eliminate its DEI function as of April 2024 and will no longer operate under DEI guidelines. The company also clarified that it is not enforcing hiring quotas or supplier diversity spending targets.

However, Harley-Davidson remains committed to building an employee base that reflects the diversity of its customers and the communities in which it operates, and believes such diversity is essential to the company's success.

In addition to these changes, Harley-Davidson is restructuring its Business Employee Resource Groups (BERGs) to better align with the company's business objectives. These groups will now have executive support with a focus on professional development, networking and mentoring.

This strategic shift is aimed at ensuring that BERG effectively contributes to both employees' personal growth and the company's overall goals. Harley-Davidson's approach reflects the company's commitment to fostering an inclusive environment where employees can grow and contribute to the company's heritage. In line with these changes, Harley-Davidson announced that it would no longer participate in the Human Rights Campaign's (HRC) scoring system, signaling a shift in how it engages with outside organizations.

Additionally, Harley-Davidson addressed concerns regarding its employee training programs, reiterating that to date, only legally mandated training has been required of employees, and that future training will be strictly business-focused rather than socially motivated.
