Harris Campaign Taps Eric Holder To Lead Vetting Of VP Candidates

Vice President Kamala Harris has tapped former Attorney General Eric Holder Jr. to lead the selection process for her running mate for the White House, according to The New York Times.

Holder and his law firm, Covington & Burling, are leading the vetting of candidates. according to Harris is less than a month away from the Democratic National Convention. Potential running mates for Harris include other Democratic candidates such as Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper. according to To ABC News.

Holder, who ran the Justice Department under the Obama administration, was the first attorney general to be charged with contempt of Congress in 2012 for refusing to cooperate with an investigation into the “Fast & Furious” scandal, which involved a “gun walking” scheme to sell a range of firearms to criminals in order to go after Mexican crime syndicates.

Even after leaving the Obama administration and returning to private practice as an attorney, Holder has remained active in Democratic politics.

Holder was speaking at a rally in support of Stacey Abrams, who ran unsuccessfully for governor in 2018. urged the crowd To “kick the hell out” of Republicans.

“If they play low, we play high. No, if they play low, we play kick them,” he said at a 2018 rally in Stockbridge, Georgia, prompting the crowd to chant “Fight!”

During an August 2021 appearance on MSNBC's “The Rachel Maddow Show,” Holder argued that liberal activists who support voting rights should be arrested.

“Democrats have to ask themselves: 'Do I want to be seen as a James Eastland, like my predecessors who opposed the passage of the Civil Rights Bill, and do I want that to be my legacy?'” by raising awareness through protests, arrests and action to end racism, Holder said at the time.
