Having a zoo in your backyard might sound crazy, but one couple has made the dream a reality.
In March 2023, Yvonne St. John and Scott St. John opened their Havasu Heights residence to local residents. St. John’s named the petting zoo “Snakebite’s Havazoo” and welcomes hundreds of residents each month.
To reach the zoo, guests should follow State Route 95 north and turn right at the Havasu Heights exit. From there it winds through paved and unpaved roads. A roadside sign directs you to the gravel parking lot adjacent to the zoo entrance.
From the main gate you can hear the cries of children and livestock. Climbing over rocky terrain leads to several shaded pavilions to the left and right. Rustic farmhouse decor lines the surrounding hills and around the zoo owner’s home.
“Our community is important to us, whether it’s one family or 150+ people,” said Yvonne St. John. “We love sharing our property and animals with other families. There is no place like this in the Havasu area that is safe and free for young children.”
There are over 60 animals on site, including pot-bellied pigs, miniature horses, goats, ducks, broods and donkeys. There are also fish and turtle ponds and turtle habitats throughout the backyard zoo.
Entry to see and pet the animals is free, but Yvonne St. John says donations from guests are welcome. In addition to seeing the animals, little ones can also ride small ponies and miniature horses for a stroll around the stables. Complimentary popcorn, cold water, and lawn games are also provided to visitors.
There are also plenty of opportunities for fun snaps for families and tourists. Yvonne St. John added that at least one of each visitor must sign a disclaimer before interacting with the animals.
“We teach about animals, but everyone also learns how to respect them,” said Yvonne St. John. “We love seeing the happiness and wonder of families as little ones hold chickens, pet piglets and donkeys, and ride ponies.”
The petting zoo’s summer hours are Saturdays from 8 AM to 10 AM. For the remaining months, the zoo is open Saturdays from 9am to 1pm. If you can’t visit on Saturday, you can book an appointment for another time, says Yvonne St. John.
