A Lake Havasu man accused of sexual assault last year was sentenced last week to five days in jail and three years' probation under an agreement with Mohave County prosecutors.
Christian P. Robertson, 20, pleaded guilty on January 12 to a charge of aggravated assault. The sexual assault charge was dismissed by the Mohave County Attorney's Office. The plea agreement was accepted on February 12 at a hearing led by Mojave Superior Court Judge Billy Sipe.
Police said the incident began more than two years ago and Robertson had a sexual relationship with the victim. Police said Robertson sent a text message to the victim on Dec. 23, 2021, with the intent of procuring cocaine for himself and another friend. Robertson then allegedly asked the victim to drive him and his friend home.
Police said Robertson's friend waited in his car while Robertson entered the victim's home. Robertson reportedly started acting strange shortly after arriving. When Robertson learned the victim did not have cocaine in his home, Robertson and the victim reportedly began having consensual sex.
According to the police report, Robertson asked the victim to have anal sex, but she refused. Robertson allegedly continued to make demands on her victim until he forced himself on her, and she continued to refuse.
The victim repeatedly told Robertson to stop, and Robertson eventually did so, according to the report. The victim drove Robertson and his friend home, and the victim got into an argument with Robertson before leaving that night.
Police said the victim reported the incident to Lake Havasu detectives on January 3, after she allegedly told police that Robertson had begun a romantic relationship with a 14-year-old girl.
Investigators recorded all text messages between Robertson and the victim within two weeks of the alleged assault to be used as evidence in the case. Lake Havasu Police referred the case to the Mohave County Attorney's Office, which formally charged Robertson in October of the same year.
Robertson was ultimately arrested on November 23, 2023, when officers encountered Robertson during a civil traffic stop in Lake Havasu City.
Assistant Mohave County Attorney Amanda Clairhout, who was the prosecutor in the case, described the plea deal that was offered and accepted by Robertson last month.
“Jurors have a very hard time getting qualified consent,” Clairhout said. “(The victim) consented to vaginal sex, but not anal sex. I wasn't sure the jury would understand that.”
As of Wednesday, Robertson was not in custody.
