Twenty community organizations will each receive $15,000 for innovative community-driven solutions that address the needs of rural and urban HIV-infected older adults and long-term survivors.

These funds are part of the first phase of two initiatives worth a total of $1 million focused on HIV and older and long-term survivors. The two challenges were designed by the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of the Assistant Secretary of Health, the Office of Infectious Diseases and HIV/AIDS Policy (OIDP), and the Office of Community Living (ACL).

Two challenges are:

  • “Innovation to meet the needs of HIV-infected older/long-term survivors in urban communities” challenge
  • “The $500,000 Challenge to Rural HIV and Aging”

These efforts will support innovations that help improve the health of aging and long-term survivors of HIV infection, especially those of racial and ethnic minorities and LGBTQ+.

Each challenge is divided into two phases. In the first phase referenced above, the winners will each be awarded $15,000 for their concept design. In the second phase, these winners begin developing their solutions and testing concepts on a small scale.

MHAF also works to improve the efficiency, effectiveness, and impact of federal investments in HIV programs and services for racial and ethnic minorities. These challenges are National HIV/AIDS Strategy Federal Implementation Plan.

“Different communities often require different approaches, so we put forward challenges for both rural and urban communities that call for effective community-based solutions,” said Aging ACL. Assistant Secretary of State Edwin Walker said.
