Hidden Roman Route Associated with Emperor Commodus to Open to the Public for the First Time

Tunnel to the Colosseum Set to Open to Public

Authorities have revealed that a previously hidden tunnel leading to the Colosseum in Rome will be accessible to the public by the end of October.

This tunnel, built in the 1st and 2nd centuries AD with some assistance from horses, facilitated the movement of dignitaries straight to the altar within the extensive amphitheater. This area, often referred to as the Emperor’s Box, was reserved for high-ranking officials during events like gladiator games, according to the Colosseum Archaeological Park (CAP). The design allowed the emperor to travel incognito, avoiding the throngs of spectators.

Constructed during the reigns of Emperors Domitian and Trajan, the tunnel later became known as the Strait of Commodus, named after the 2nd-century emperor, following its discovery in the 19th century. Historical accounts suggest that Commodus survived an assassination attempt, which likely contributed to the tunnel’s significance. Archaeologist Barbara Nazzaro, involved in its restoration, explained that connecting these historical narratives seemed quite logical.

Renovations at the site are expected to be completed between October 2024 and September 2025. The project includes repairing stucco and plaster, replacing a collapsed roof, and enhancing both lighting and accessibility for visitors.

Commodus ruled Rome solely from 180 to 192 AD and is often critiqued for destabilizing the empire after a period of relative peace established by his predecessors, including his father, Marcus Aurelius. Britannica notes that he fancied himself a divine figure, likening himself to Hercules and even performing as a gladiator. Interestingly, he later became a well-known character in the film Gladiator released in 2000.

Despite surviving an earlier assassination attempt, he was ultimately strangled by a wrestler—a day after he donned gladiator attire and expressed his wish to become consul. This event catalyzed a rapid descent into civil war for the empire.

Starting at the end of October, “Full Experience Tickets” will be available for purchase on the official website ticketing.colosseo.it.
