High School Student Arrested After Allegedly Gunning Down Classmate In Bathroom, Officials Say

A 16-year-old high school student was arrested Friday after allegedly shooting a classmate in a school bathroom, local authorities said.

According to a press release from the Harford County Sheriff's Office (HCSO), authorities responded to the scene of an assault at Joppatowne High School in Maryland on Friday at approximately 12:36 p.m. A Sheriff's Office School Resource Officer assigned to the high school was on scene at the time of the shooting and “responded immediately, identifying and addressing the threat,” HCSO said.

Authorities entered the school “within two minutes” and began searching for the suspect and potential victims.

“Students evacuated the 15-year-old Joppatowne High School student who was injured in the shooting from the school gates, where the school nurse, staff and students provided care and support,” the press release said.

According to the sheriff's office, the victim, 15-year-old Warren Curtis Grant, was transported by helicopter to a local hospital where he later died from his injuries.

After detectives identified a suspect, they began searching the area. (RELATED: Authorities arrest father of Georgia school shooting suspect).

According to a press release, a call was made around 12:50 p.m. reporting a “suspicious person attempting to break into a home.” Nearby officers who had been searching for the suspected shooter responded to the scene and took him into custody a few minutes later.

Joppatowne High School student Jaylen LaShawn Prince, 16, was arrested without incident, authorities said.

According to the press release, Prince has been charged as an adult with murder, criminal use of a firearm, and first and second degree assault. He is currently being held in a local jail awaiting appearance before a judicial officer.

“The circumstances leading up to this incident and the relationship between the victim and suspect remain under investigation, however, information indicates that Mr. Grant and Mr. Prince knew each other prior to the shooting,” the release stated.

As of Saturday, authorities said they had no outstanding suspects and believe there is no ongoing threat to the high school or the community.
