Maricopa, Arizona (3TV/CBS 5) — Police say the man is in custody after leading officers in Maricopa on Sunday night and chasing them and firing at them. At around 6pm, police were called to the house as the assault escalated. When they arrived, they found the man who told officers that his roommate, 50-year-old Michael Zapata, had attacked him. and suffered burns. Zapata then left home.
A chase was launched, and officers spotted Zapata’s car near Maricopa Casa Grande Highway and Porter Road before crashing into another vehicle, investigators said. Zapata then began firing at Maricopa police, who opened fire, detectives said. Zapata was not shot and suffered minor injuries, police said. He was taken to hospital but was later released and put in prison. No officers were injured.
The officers involved are on leave while the investigation is ongoing. Their names have not yet been released. This is his 20th officer-involved shooting outside of Maricopa County and his 61st in the state in 2022.
