Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Monday night that Americans who spread Russian disinformation should face civil and criminal prosecution.
Clinton said on MSNBC's “The Rachel Maddow Show” that Americans were “complicit” in spreading Russian disinformation and must be held legally accountable as a result. She accused an unspecified number of Republican lawmakers of “repeat[ing]the Russian narrative.”
“I think it's important to prosecute the Russians. [Robert] Mueller indicted many Russians involved in direct election interference and election solicitation. [Republican nominee Donald] “It's the same as when Trump attacked Russia in 2016,” Clinton said, “but there are Americans who are engaging in this kind of propaganda, and I think prosecuting them civilly, or even criminally, would be a more deterrent, because the chances that Russians would ever be tried in the United States are slim, with very few exceptions.”

Clinton said the Justice Department must thwart allegations that foreign adversaries are trying to influence Americans about which candidate to vote for.
“So I think we need to make all the connections clear and make it very clear that you can vote however you want, but fundamentally we are not going to allow adversaries, Russia, China, Iran or anybody else, to try to influence the American people about how we should vote when it comes to choosing our leaders,” Clinton added. On September 4, the Department of Justice alleged that Russian President Putin directed Russian companies to use social media to target Americans and spread propaganda to interfere in the 2024 election. The Department of Justice indicted two Russian-based employees of the Russian state-run media outlet RT on charges of “money laundering conspiracy and violating the Foreign Agents Registration Act.”
