Hockey is set to return to Mobile after more than 20 years.

On Wednesday, Mobile City received some thrilling news that many had been hoping for—professional hockey is making a comeback to area ports after more than two decades.

The Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) is planning to introduce an expansion team in Mobile. Although the team’s name hasn’t been revealed yet, they are set to take the ice for the 2027-2028 season. Interestingly, Mobile Mystic, which played in the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL), spent seven seasons there from 1995 to 2002 before relocating to Duluth, Georgia.

Andy Kaufman, the CEO of the new team, expressed enthusiasm about the development. “We are excited and proud to bring professional hockey back to Mobile,” he stated. He added that the aim is to create a competitive team while promoting a welcoming atmosphere for families in the new arena coming soon.

The team will be operated by Zawyer Sports & Entertainment, based in Jacksonville, which already manages multiple ECHL franchises, along with the Charlotte Checkers in the American Hockey League (AHL), serving as a minor league affiliate of the NHL.

SPHL Commissioner Doug Price also shared his excitement. He described Kaufman as embodying a true passion for hockey and for enriching the community, which made him a valuable addition to the league.

Construction is currently underway for a new arena to replace the Mobile Civic Center, scheduled to open in January 2027.

Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimson noted that this initiative aligns perfectly with the spirit of the city. He emphasized Zawyer’s strong commitment to community investment and expressed confidence that the residents of Mobile are ready to embrace professional hockey.
