Hoover mayor addresses death threats aimed at city council candidate while FBI and local police investigate the allegations

Hoover officials have condemned the threats and slander directed at city council candidate Tanvere Patel as both local police and federal agents investigate a recent surge of harassment related to the upcoming election.

As reported by CBS 42, Hoover Police and the FBI were alerted after it was reported that Patel had received an online message filled with racist remarks and death threats.

Patel, who is a resident running for Place 1, mentioned that the attack occurred on a Facebook page associated with her recent campaign.

During a press conference on Tuesday, Patel shared the emotional toll the harassment has taken on her family. “We came to this country from India, and I’m grateful to be here and to be living the American dream,” she expressed.

“The last few days have been incredibly painful and distressing. My family and I have received hateful messages, insults, and even threats to our lives.

She noted that these threats seem aimed at silencing her and discouraging community engagement, but firmly stated that she would not be silenced.

“Being called a ‘lughead’ or facing violent threats is not only frightening, but being told to go back to India is just heartbreaking,” Patel remarked. “But I want to make this clear: I still believe in America. I still believe in the red, white, and blue, and I still believe in the American dream. Regardless of one’s faith or background, all citizens deserve to live freely and participate fully in our democracy. Hatred will not prevail.”

Patel’s attorney, William White, mentioned that authorities have identified a suspect from Georgia linked to some of the threatening communications. The FBI’s Birmingham office has stated it will not confirm or deny the existence of the investigation.

Hoover Mayor Frank Brokert also made a statement regarding the issue.

In an official statement, he denounced the attacks and assured residents of their safety during the election. “We won’t allow hatred to win,” Brokert said.

“The Hoover Police Department is actively investigating and plans to ensure that all residents have free and safe voting opportunities. We encourage everyone to come out on Tuesday and vote, confident in their safety.”

Patel is well known in the community for her business leadership and contributions to public service, co-founding Birmingham-based ConcertIDC and working at Red Crescent Clinic in Alabama. She is set to face off against Robin Schultz in the race for the Hoover City Council position.

The city elections in Hoover are scheduled for Tuesday, August 26th.
