House Committee Opens Investigation Into ‘Harvard’s Disregard’ For Civil Rights, Letter Says

The House Committee on Surveillance and Government Reform announced Thursday that it had released an investigation into alleged violations of the Civil Rights Act after rejecting the Trump administration’s request to address anti-Semitism on campus.

Committee chair James Kommer and House Republican leader Ellis Stefanik are calling for documents to be submitted relating to anti-Semitic events and disciplinary actions forced by the university. Lawmakers plan to investigate what they claim is “Harvard University’s neglect of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964,” the letter says.

“The Committee on Oversight and Government Reform oversees Harvard University’s lack of compliance with civil rights laws despite receiving more than $5 billion in federal funds per year,” the letter reads. “This oversight is required for the inappropriate use of Harvard federal funds.”

In an official statement Monday afternoon, Harvard declared it “not surrendered” and rejected the proposal. The joint task force fighting anti-Semitism, consisting of the Department of Education (ED), the Department of Justice (DOJ), and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), quickly revoked more than $2 billion in university grants. “Harvard clearly cannot prevent illegal discrimination or, at your direction, refuses to enter into a reasonable settlement agreement proposed by federal officials intended to ensure Harvard University is compliant with the law,” the committee’s letter states. “No matter how entitled your actions, there is no institution that violates the law.”

Harvard received $686 million in taxpayer dollars in fiscal year 2024 despite bringing in $2.4 billion in revenue from $53.2 billion in donations that same year.
