HR Professionals Are Concerned About the Idea of Listening to Robby Starbuck

Some HR professionals have reportedly been encouraged by the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) to invite conservative activist Robbie Starbuck to speak at a panel during SHRM’s upcoming fall gathering.

Back in June, SHRM revealed it was rebranding its Annual Inclusion Conference, now called the SHRM Blueprint. This change reflects what they describe as “challenging” issues surrounding diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). The event is set to occur in late October in Louisville, Kentucky, and will feature a panel discussion with Starbuck and CNN contributor Van Jones.

Starbuck has gained attention for his outspoken criticism of DEI efforts, previously describing them as “poison.” He also hosts a podcast titled “The Robby Starbuck Show” and is currently associated with a conservative think tank.

Reports indicate that various HR experts have voiced their discontent with SHRM’s decision to feature Starbuck. Joseph Riddle, a director in workplace consulting, expressed skepticism about the potential benefits of Starbuck’s involvement, stating he initially planned to purchase tickets for the SHRM event.

In a similar vein, many professionals on LinkedIn reacted negatively to Starbuck’s planned participation, suggesting it could lead to more frustration rather than productive dialogue. Some noted that SHRM has already stepped back from several DEI initiatives due to political pressure, making this decision seem counterproductive.

Another LinkedIn user articulated concerns that Starbuck’s talk could have detrimental effects on businesses and the economy at large. They emphasized the importance of fostering a diverse workforce to ensure sustainability and engagement, suggesting that Starbuck’s approach might promote division rather than unity.

One individual commented that this decision feels like a step back for SHRM, reflecting a trend of endorsing right-wing ideas. Others shared sentiments that the organization’s leadership appears to favor a certain ideological conformity instead of genuine diversity.

In light of these criticisms, the president of SHRM remarked that encouraging diverse perspectives is a crucial yet often overlooked aspect of workplace diversity. SHRM aims to facilitate respectful dialogue and present a broader angle in workplace discussions.

As of now, SHRM has not responded to requests for additional comment.
