Radio host Hugh Hewitt said Monday evening of “Hoanity,” Harvard University should be stripped of its tax-free status as well as grants.
Harvard filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration in Massachusetts federal court Monday evening, claiming the administration was trying to withhold federal funds as “leverage.” While discussing the new lawsuit, Fox’s Sean Hannity asked the radio host for his thoughts and asked if he believed taxpayers would be better than “supporting universities that stick to basics.”
“I am open to Harvard’s claim to a unique labor sector for research that no one else has done,” Hewitt said. “But we are not open to tax-free status at universities that discriminate based on race, ethnicity, or country of origin. We don’t know that Harvard is trying to hide thanks to the lawsuit they filed today.”
“It seems like a good crime to be the best defense. Rather than sitting down and explaining to the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Office or the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Office, why are they not violating the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
In April, the Ministry of Education sent the university to comply with a list of reforms to address anti-Semitism on campus, including implementing a disciplinary process, improving screening of international students with “hostile” opinions, and adjusting reviews of “programs” with significant records of anti-sensitivity. After Harvard refused to follow, the Joint Task Force fighting anti-Semitism announced a freeze on the university’s multi-year grants and a multi-year contract value of $60 million.
Hewitt continued how the Supreme Court ruled to block positive action after lawsuits were filed against both Harvard and the University of North Carolina.
“So, in addition to discrimination against Asian Americans, we launch a pattern of anti-Semitic threats, total violence, like subtracting tax-free status,” Hewitt said. “I’ll add one more, Sean. The Harvard department, the second man at Harvard, he was in the Reagan Department of Justice. We didn’t overlap, but we were in the Reagan Department of Justice.”
“We all know what the Bob Jones University incident meant. It was in favor of a simple proposition. If you are engaged in racism and discrimination against protection groups, you will lose your tax exemption status,” Hewitt said. “So if they’re doing this, they shouldn’t get money, they should also lose their tax-free status.”
Harvard was also attacked by another cancellation of money on Monday evening. A senior health and human resources official told daily callers that the administration will suspend $1 billion from the National Institutes of Health to schools.
Officials said the decision to suspend was due to neglect to address anti-Semitism on campus, adding that school officials should “completely adhere to Title IV of the 1964 Civil Rights Act.”
